I had fun photographing these pincushion flowers. There are many species, but pincushion flowers are a type of flower native to South Africa and Zimbabwe. These flowers were photographed with an off-camera flash behind a soft box in order to diffuse the light and get that light background. Even with the back-lighting, though, most of them still needed an 1.3 second or longer exposure, which is the time that the camera shutter is open to take the picture. Aren’t they unusual looking?
This image was shot with the camera lens flipped around backwards and held up close to the camera to get a really macro view of the middle of one of the flowers.
